Unit information
This unit aims to develop your knowledge of Europe between the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century to the dawn of the Renaissance in the fifteenth century.
You will learn about the development of Christianity and the violent and bitter struggles between the Church and secular rulers, through to the evolution of social institutions, the world of crusaders, dissenters, the prominence of visual culture, medieval mentalities, law, popular culture and beliefs, along with the relations between ordinary people and power. In doing so, you will develop an understanding of the context for emerging modernity and develop your critical thinking and analysis skills.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding of the key events and developments that shaped Medieval Europe;
- apply the methods and ethical conventions of the discipline to the evaluation and application of historical evidence from Medieval Europe;
- critically examine and evaluate a range of methodologies, concepts and debates from the historical scholarship on Medieval Europe;
- construct well-researched, logically argued and clearly communicated written assessment tasks based on evidence from a variety of primary and secondary materials; and
- reflect critically on knowledge gained, skills learned and opinions formed from their practice of scholarly historical investigation in this unit.
