Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used neuroscience technique to map the human brain. What does MRI tell use about brain function and structure? What can MRI tell us about brain changes in neurological diseases and mental health disorders? What are the main limitations to using MRI to map the human brain?

This unit searches for answers to these questions by developing your skills in critical analysis of research findings, analysis of MRI data and case studies of brain pathologies detected using MRI. On the basis of these skills you will gain a clear understanding of what MRI can tell us about the human brain.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. synthesise theory and empirical evidence to explain how magnetic resonance imaging is used to map the human brain;
  2. explain the main neurobiology underpinning functional magnetic resonance imaging in advanced detail;
  3. describe the controversies about functional magnetic resonance imaging;
  4. critique analyse the empirical evidence using magnetic resonance imaging to map human brain function and structure;
  5. interpret and compare magnetic resonance imaging data to understand brain function; and
  6. integrate neuroscience and magnetic resonance imaging principles to understand various brain pathologies.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
