Unit information
What does going to a museum mean if the visit is all online? What can we learn from digital objects? How do we tell stories about the past and present through digital means? How is the visitor experience different?
This unit explores the place of the digital in museums and collections. You will study what effect digital technologies have had on how museums curate and catalogue their collections and how they make them interactive.
You will learn a range of skills and explore a variety of themes including authenticity, ethics, and activism. The unit also offers a chance to curate your own online exhibition on a theme that is important to you.

Notes
Mixture of online lectures and tutorials which address different themes, and workshops to develop skills to create the online exhibition materials.
The unit will feature an assessment where students curate their own online exhibition using collections of their choosing. This will allow for self-directed learning and the workshops will foster interdisciplinary peer to peer learning as students will have a chance to discuss their collections of choice. In addition to drawing on UNE’s own history resources, especially the Museum of Antiquities, students will be introduced to case studies which feature natural history and fine art collections in addition to historical and archaeological materials in order to foster interdisciplinary critical thinking and approaches.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate expert knowledge and comprehension of the use of digital media within the museum field;
- demonstrate advanced skills and interdisciplinary thinking in the interpretation and online curation of collections;
- critically analyse and evaluate the interpretation and curation of museum collections in online environments;
- critically reflect on the relationship of digital offerings to both in person and hybrid experiences in museum contexts;
- demonstrate advanced digital literacy and confidence in online environments; and
- apply highly developed communication skills.
