Unit information
Humans continually change and develop, with biological and social factors as well as major life issues, events and transitions shaping the course of development throughout our lives.
Lifespan developmental psychology is the scientific study of this development, incorporating the processes of continuity and change that occur throughout a person’s life.
Studying this unit, you will explore the major theoretical perspectives of developmental psychology, including psychoanalytic, social learning, behavioural, biological and cognitive, to examine the constancies and changes of a person’s life from childhood to adulthood.
Providing you with valuable insights into human development that have practical applications in many contexts, the unit also offers opportunities to hone your transferrable skills in critical thinking and scientific communication.

GradDipPsych students: It is a requirement that students who wish to enrol in PSYC213 in Trimester 1 in order to complete their degree program in three trimesters, complete PSYC101 and PSYC102 in Trimester 3 of the preceding year.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the theories, principles, methodologies, and research findings in developmental psychology from conception to end of life;
- outline the course of development throughout the lifespan across several domains including physical, cognitive, emotional, personality, attachment, intelligence, language, social cognition, and moral development;
- demonstrate an understanding of the major theoretical perspectives that have been applied to the study of human development (including social-emotional, perceptual, cognitive, biological, and behavioural);
- apply critical thinking skills in evaluating developmental psychology literature; and
- transmit knowledge in written form using the American Psychological Association (APA) referencing style.
