Unit information
Underpinning a child’s academic performance is their emotional wellbeing. As a teacher, you need a solid understanding of the key concepts in educational psychology that explain the importance of personal development (e.g. intellectual, social, moral and physical) when it comes to students being successful at school and able to function well in society.
This unit will examine educational psychology theories such as the importance of ‘optimization’ and ‘flourishing’ in learning and the value of holistic psychology when it comes to motivating students in the classroom. The unit will encourage you to appreciate contemporary theories in educational psychology and importantly, to teach you about effective assessment, measurement, and evaluation procedures of student learning.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of educational psychology theories, including physical, social, moral and intellectual development relative to adaptive outcomes (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key concepts of personal well-being, play, and optimal best practice that relates to how students learn, and how individuals operate in society (GTSD 1.1.1, 4.4.1);
- demonstrate understanding of key concepts pertaining to assessment, evaluation, and measurement in school contexts (GTSD 2.3.1, 5.1.1, 5.3.1, 5.4.1);
- demonstrate a capacity to work collaboratively and effectively in an ICT environment (GTSD 3.4.1); and
- demonstrate a capacity to responsibly self- and peer-assess in team activities (GTSD 5.1.1).
