Unit information
This unit is designed to introduce school leaders to theoretical concepts of leadership for learning analysis. It provides leaders with foundational knowledge, skills and capabilities to lead improvement in schooling contexts.
By addressing five key leadership capabilities - Vision and Values, Innovation and Improvement, Strategy and Solutions, People and Performance, Health and Happiness – and their behaviours, you will develop your expertise in fostering innovation and improvement, implementing strategy and solutions, engaging with people, enhancing performance and promoting wellbeing.
You will also demonstrate your knowledge and skills by applying a professional learning plan to address various capabilities and will complete two small case studies where you detail how you have engaged in reflection both in and on action.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand and apply theoretical concepts related to the school leadership capabilities and the five factors associated with effective leadership;
- undertake learning analysis to critically assess practices associated with key school leadership capabilities;
- utilise school leadership theory to apply solutions to situational contexts; and
- synthesise ‘problem solving’ approaches that reflect the application of capabilities for effective school leadership practice to issues that arise within their school contexts.

| Assessment 3: Case study and oral presentation – Assurance task | Yes | 50% | All offerings | Identify a leadership challenge in your school or another context. Use the leadership capabilities as a lens to assess your response to the challenge in a written case study. Present your findings in an oral presentation.
