Unit information
There are many benefits to learning another language. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure.
In this unit you will develop upper intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese.
You will continue to develop your listening and speaking skills in Japanese to an upper intermediate level and you will enhance your skills in reading and writing Japanese.
You will further develop your reading skills and be introduced to a basic awareness of the generic structure of texts.
You will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at an upper intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Notes
Students who have had a break of several years from the time they last studied Japanese language units should take a placement test.
First language (Japanese) speakers may not enrol in Japanese language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate upper intermediate level listening and speaking skills in Japanese with coherence and accuracy and basic awareness of the generic structure of authentic spoken texts;
- demonstrate upper intermediate skills in reading and writing in Japanese with coherence and accuracy; consolidation of approximately 400-450 previously learned kanji and an additional 135 new kanji; and basic awareness of the generic structure of authentic written texts;
- apply upper intermediate knowledge of structures and lexico-grammar through the study of different types of texts or genres; and
- apply knowledge of further aspects of Japanese socio-linguistics and socio-culture relevant to inter-cultural communication at an upper intermediate level.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.
