Unit information
There are many benefits to learning another language. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure.
Continuing on from the first trimester intermediate Japanese language unit, in this unit you will develop intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese.
You will enhance your intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese and your intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese. You’ll consolidate previously studied 280-300 kanji, and learn an additional 120-130 new kanji characters.
You will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at an intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Notes
Students with prior knowledge of Japanese who are unsure of their current level of proficiency should take a placement test.
First language (Japanese) speakers may not enrol in Japanese language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.
Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate intermediate level listening and speaking skills in Japanese (comprehension, pronunciation, intonation and fluency) on topics relating to part-time job, politeness, shopping, expressing dissatisfaction, education;
- demonstrate intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese (consolidating previously studied approximately 280-300 kanji, learning an additional approximately 120-130 new kanji) on further topics relating to part-time job, politeness, shopping, expressing dissatisfaction, education; and
- investigate and analyse fundamental aspects of Japanese socio-linguistics and socio-culture relevant to inter-cultural communication at an intermediate level.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.
