Unit information
There are many benefits to learning another language. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure.
This unit is for students who have completed HSC-level Japanese (or have equivalent proficiency).
The unit aims to develop your early intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese.
You will enhance your early intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese and your early intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese. You will consolidate your knowledge of approximately 150-200 previously studied elementary kanji, and learn an additional 130 new kanji (approximately).
In this unit you will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at early intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Students with prior knowledge of Japanese who are unsure of their current level of proficiency should contact the discipline convenor.
Students with prior knowledge of Japanese who are unsure of their current level of proficiency should take a placement test.
First language (Japanese) speakers may not enrol in Japanese language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.
Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate intermediate level listening and speaking skills in Japanese (comprehension, pronunciation, intonation and fluency) on topics relating to searching for a job, a special celebration day, travel and hearsay;
- demonstrate intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese (consolidating approximately 150-200 previously studied elementary kanji, learning an additional approximately 130 new kanji) on topics relating to searching for a job, a special celebration day, travel and hearsay; and
- investigate and analyse aspects of Japanese socio-linguistics and socio-culture relevant to inter-cultural communication at an intermediate level.
