Unit information
The cognitive benefits to learning another language are many and varied. Improve your memory, keep your mind agile and increase your ability to communicate with more people globally, whether for business or leisure.
This unit is for beginners and aims to establish elementary communicative competence in Japanese. You will learn basic aural and oral skills in Japanese (including how to introduce yourself, talk about your daily activities, and use fundamental forms of verbs, adjectives and particles. You will also develop basic skills in reading and writing in Japanese (all hiragana and katakana, and elementary-level kanji).
In this unit you will gain an awareness about some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Notes
Students with prior knowledge of Japanese equivalent to completion of HSC Japanese Continuers with a mark of 75% or higher should enrol at 200 level (this includes equivalent study of Japanese at secondary school or university level in another country or in-country study in Japan).
Students with prior knowledge of Japanese who are unsure of their current level of proficiency should take a placement test.
First language (Japanese) speakers may not enrol in Japanese language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.
Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- participate in simple conversations using basic aural and oral skills in Japanese (including introducing oneself, talking about one's daily activities, fundamental forms of verbs, adjectives and particles);
- demonstrate basic skills in reading and writing in Japanese (using all hiragana and katakana, and elementary-level kanji) on topics relating to self, family, friends and daily life; and
- recognise aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to inter-cultural communication at an elementary level.
