Unit information

Prepare for the rapidly changing world of biotechnology with this unit which introduces you to the fundamental concepts of molecular biology and the ways in which proteins are encoded by genetic information.
You will explore the information molecules of cells, DNA and RNA, and learn about the major cellular macromolecules: nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids.
Examining DNA replication, transcription and translation, you will also gain insights into genetic engineering technologies.
Topics focus on the relationship between structure and biological functions, including proteins that act as biological catalysts and the role of respiration to obtain chemical energy, with special reference to sugar and carbohydrate oxidation.
This unit also allows you to extend your critical thinking, problem solving and scientific writing ability.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- explain the features of biological molecules and their role in biological processes;
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of the mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription and translation and relate principles of molecular biology to genetic engineering;
- analyse the relationship of structure and function in the cell's macromolecules: nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids;
- explore the role of enzymes as catalysts in biological systems and outline the control of enzyme activity;
- identify the key concepts in metabolic biochemistry using glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation as examples; and
- apply an advanced theoretical understanding of biochemistry laboratory techniques to solve complex problems and demonstrate skills in data analysis, interpretation and reporting of experimental data.

Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
