Unit information
If you have never studied chemistry before, the background knowledge required for science-based degree programs can be intimidating. This is a foundation level unit, designed to help you to develop basic knowledge of key chemistry concepts for further university study.
Studying with our supportive academic team, you will be introduced to the important role played by chemistry in society today.
You will explore the core principles of the discipline, equipping you to understand fundamental concepts relating to matter, elements, ions, molecules and compounds, measurements, chemical reactions and bonding.
With practical exercises that provide you with an experience in a range of lab techniques, our aim in this unit is to give you an appreciation of chemistry, and the confidence to become a flexible, independent scientific thinker.

Recommended for students contemplating enrolment in CHEM units who are not familiar with the content of HSC Chemistry in NSW or its equivalent. Please send enquiries to chemenquiries@une.edu.au >. In your email please state your course of study and your mathematics background.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand chemistry plays an essential role in society;
- demonstrate an understanding of fundamental chemical principles such as matter, elements, ions, molecules and compounds, atomic structure, measurements and chemical reactions;
- describe, interpret and explain basic chemical concepts including bonding, stoichiometry, solutions, acid-base and redox chemistry;
- describe and interpret types of hydrocarbons;
- solve simple mathematical and conceptual chemistry problems, and demonstrate a capability for self-directed learning; and
- communicate knowledge by interpreting the essential details of experimental procedures, key observations, results and conclusions; and applying theory.
