Unit information
Building on your understanding of molecular biology and biochemistry, this unit completes your introduction to the discipline.
Through a combination of lectures and practical sessions you will extend your theoretical knowledge and technical skills, exploring cutting-edge biochemical techniques.
With a focus on the interactions between biochemical reactions and their impact on metabolism, you will examine lipids and their role in cellular membranes and energy metabolism, and amino acids and energy metabolism.
You will also develop an understanding of integrated mammalian metabolism and its regulation, particularly in relation to liver and muscle function, and the physiology and biochemistry of digestion.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- generate an integrated regulation map of carbohydrate, amino acid and lipid metabolism;;
- extend the key concepts of the metabolic division of labour and the role of membranes in cellular biochemistry;
- demonstrate detailed knowledge of the biochemical inter-relationship of skeletal and cardiac muscles on liver metabolism to support exercise;
- define the biochemical processes digestion and the metabolic relationship of the digestive system and the liver focusing on the regulation of metabolic pathway control to regulate the flow of metabolites between organs during the fed/fast cycle under various physiological/pathological states; and
- perform critical academic analyses and make recommendations concerning published biochemistry scholarly manuscripts.
