Children’s literature is an important tool for exposing children to the moral, ethical and practical problems of the world in a way that is manageable and accessible for them.

When you study this unit you will be introduced to the key elements of children’s literature, using case studies from children’s books, stories and poetry. You will gain an understanding of the range of concepts involved in analysing children’s texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts and the role of literature in childhood.

You will explore a range of literary genres, techniques, and styles (including humour, fantasy and realism) in order to gain essential skills in reading, understanding and writing about literature.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

demonstrate familiarity with a variety of literary texts for children and young adults to develop knowledge and understanding of genre, style, and literary techniques;
apply skills in close reading and analysis of literary texts, including an understanding of literary techniques and the language of literary analysis;
critically read or view a range of texts through relevant literary and cultural theories to enhance knowledge of genre, narrative and ideology;
understand a range of concepts involved in analysing children's texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts, and the role of literature in childhood; and
use appropriate conceptual language for discussing literary texts and texts written for young readers.
