Unit information
This introductory unit provides you with foundational knowledge of contemporary issues and theories relevant to counselling, preparing you for effective and ethical practice in the field.
You will focus on developing your understanding of the basic principles, aims and goals of counselling theories, including the role of both the counsellor and client in the counselling process, and how change is conceptualised by each approach. Diversity as it relates to counselling theory will also be investigated, ensuring you are equipped to engage effectively with diverse clients and address their unique needs in a professional and culturally sensitive manner.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand the major contemporary issues in counselling;
- identify the major theoretical approaches to counselling including the principles, aims and goals of each major counselling theory;
- describe the concept and process of change, and the roles of both the counsellor and client, as discussed by each major theory; and
- discuss the issue of diversity as it relates to counselling practice.
