This lower intermediate unit consolidates the foundations laid in two-and-a-half previous years of Chinese study or the equivalent.

The main focus of the unit is on understanding spoken Chinese, although some work on speaking, and on reading and writing Chinese characters, is also incorporated and assessed.

By studying many recordings of authentic spoken Chinese on a variety of topics relating to life in a Chinese context, you will expand your vocabulary, review and expand your knowledge of Chinese grammar, and extend your understanding of Chinese culture. By developing your listening skills you will be helped to understand spoken Chinese with greater confidence. You will also improve your proficiency in speaking Chinese while studying this unit.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

demonstrate effective listening skills to understand spoken Chinese in a range of authentic contexts on a variety of daily life topics and levels of formality;
demonstrate the ability to transmit knowledge effectively in spoken Chinese on a range of daily life topics;
further apply the major grammatical patterns of Chinese effectively and accurately in spoken expression, and in writing (including the use of handwritten Chinese characters) at intermediate level of proficiency; and
demonstrate developed critical listening skills and strategies to generate solutions to the challenges of understanding spoken Chinese at an intermediate level of proficiency.
