Unit information
The planning sector is one of Australia’s largest industries, with a growing demand for employees with a combination of academic knowledge and practical skills to solve complex problems.
This is the first of UNE’s two new capstone units that equip you with workplace-ready skills to apply to a range of careers in urban and regional planning practice.
Through a mix of research, discussion, shared learning experiences and real-world projects facilitated by industry partners, you will develop the foundational knowledge and techniques to perform with confidence in a variety of planning functions.
You will also enhance your analysis, negotiation, communication and decision-making and digital skills.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate well-developed knowledge of a range of skills relevant to the urban and regional planning workplace;
- convey current theory to frameworks that underpin various practical planning skills;
- demonstrate professional understanding of practical frameworks through which planning skills are applied to project requirements in planning practice;
- apply expert skills in verbal and written communication relevant to various professional planning contexts; and
- utilise well-developed judgement to convey a broad knowledge of workplace practice in urban and regional planning.
