Unit information
This unit will provide you with an introduction to using Information and Communication Technology at university so that you become a confident participant in all aspects of the UNE learning environment.
You will be introduced to ‘online learning’, and extend your ability to communicate effectively using email. You will become confident engaging in online discussions and you will learn how to use the UNE’s online learning tools, as well as the internet, for research purposes. You will also gain a thorough introduction to accessing the electronic library resources.
Assessment and learning in the unit will be based on a portfolio you use to reflect on the development of your IT, word processing and electronic communication skills. You will present your assessment tasks using a range of online software packages.
This unit is developed and taught by Oorala Aboriginal Centre staff.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate digital tool proficiency to participate in learning activities and present assessments;
- demonstrate effective communication skills by contributing meaningful ideas during online discussions and learning activities;
- enhance research competencies by identifying credible sources, critically evaluating information, and utilising UNE Library resources to support academic work;
- demonstrate ethical AI engagement by understanding the role of AI in education, its potential benefits and risks, and applying best practices for responsible AI use; and
- apply reflective practice to their learning.
