Unit information
An understanding of health psychology and the psychological factors affecting health and wellbeing is invaluable in a range of settings in our rapidly changing society.
With a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts and areas of health psychology, this unit covers topics including behaviour models, diet, regional and urban population health, Australian Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders people and non-Indigenous health, exercise, sleep, drug use, and disease-related behaviour.
You will develop an appreciation of how health is affected by an individual’s behaviour, given different social environments and biological factors.
Exploring the effects of stressors on health and relevant buffering factors, you will also learn about the effect that health status and changes in health may have on behaviour.
To understand how to promote positive health-related behaviour, you will also examine the factors underlying positive and negative changes in health-related behaviour.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of how an individual's behaviour, given different social, individual, and environmental factors, affects health;
- independently evaluate and interpret the effects of stressors on health and the relevant risk and protective factors of health;
- identify underlying factors for positive and negative changes in health-related behaviour, using this information to demonstrate knowledge and judgement in how to promote positive health related behaviour; and
- analyse and interpret the effects health status and changes in health may have on an individual's behaviour.
