Unit information
In this unit, you examine contemporary global issues and how they contribute to or detract from peace. You compare key interpretations of globalisation, then analyse global economic systems, the consequences of militarism and the power of the Military Industrial Complex (MIC). You also consider how global warming and climate change shape security, stability and justice.
You explore how nonviolent action responds to these global challenges, drawing on historical and contemporary case studies. You examine the positive political, economic and social changes that can occur when people unite and apply pressure for political, economic and social change without violence.
Across the unit, you reflect on the power of civil resistance and social movements, and on your individual and national place in a globalising world. You finish with practical insight into the praxis of nonviolence and how you can contribute to a more peaceful and equitable planet.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced body of knowledge relating to globalisation, and identify and evaluate the changes that have occurred through the process of globalisation;
- critically analyse the effects of these changes on the social, economic and political infrastructure and environments of Australia and other nations around the world;
- critically analyse the issues and theories surrounding nonviolence and nonviolent action and how these are and can be applied in responding to globalisation;
- present a coherent and sustained argument regarding processes of sustainability, peace, global justice and equity; and
- critically apply the knowledge and skills gained to the contexts of global social, military and economic systems, and movements of resistance.
