Unit information
German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and one of the most important international languages. It is the official language of Germany, Austria, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg and is also an official language of Switzerland.
This unit is designed for students with no or little previous knowledge of German.
The emphasis throughout the unit is on the acquisition of the basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in everyday German. You will also discuss aspects of contemporary German culture and society. You will achieve language proficiency equivalent to Level A1/1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Enrolment rules
Notes
Students with a pass of 70% or better in HSC German Continuers or students with HSC German Extension or equivalent level of knowledge should enrol at 200 level.
Students with existing competence in German (including HSC German Beginners) who are unsure of their current level of competence should take a placement test.
First language (German) speakers may not enrol in German language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.
Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate extended listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in German language;
- communicate in German with some depth on selected topics of everyday life, such as shopping, ordering in a restaurant, places to visit, and sports and leisure activities;
- apply an extended knowledge of contemporary German cultural and social norms and German society; and
- use cognitive skills to analyse and synthesise information.
