Unit information
Whether you are working in a generalist health setting and wish to broaden your scope, or you already work in mental health and want to extend your skills, this unit provides you with an invaluable introduction to mental health assessment for health practitioners.
With a focus on the clinical microskills necessary for developing person-centred, ethical therapeutic relationships, you will gain advanced knowledge of the elements required to perform a full risk assessment, use the DSM-5 as a diagnostic tool, and perform and document mental state examinations using the DSM-5 as a framework.
Throughout the unit, you will be encouraged to develop and utilise skills in self-reflection, self-awareness and cultural competence that will help to enhance your clinical practice in diverse mental health contexts.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically reflect upon the clinical microskills necessary for developing an ethical and supportive therapeutic relationship with mental health clients and their carers;
- demonstrate advanced knowledge in relation to performing a full risk assessment;
- demonstrate advanced knowledge in relation to performing and documenting a mental state examination using the DSM-5 as a framework; and
- utilise advanced critical reflection skills and cultural competence to enhance clinical practice in mental health.

To pass this unit, you must achieve at least 50% in this task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
