Essentials of Nursing Practice (HSNS207)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. describe the legal, ethical, professional, organisational and political contexts of healthcare in Australia, and relate these to the roles and responsibilities of Registered Nurses in Australia;
2. discuss the roles, responsibilities and scope of practice of the Australian Registered Nurse as a member of the interprofessional team, including with the use of digital health, under the NMBA Australian Registered Nurse Standards of Practice;
3. develop and demonstrate competence when communicating with clients across the lifespan and with various health professionals encompassing cultural diversity, working as an effective member of the interprofessional team;
4. collect and interpret information in order to assess clients; plan nursing care and accurately document information fundamental to nursing practice in clinical records;
5. apply and critique the principles of quality use of medicines to safely administer oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular and topical medication, demonstrating patient assessment, documentation, and reporting requirements using digital technologies in the simulated and professional education practice (PEP) settings; and
6. apply and justify infection control principles and occupational health and safety practices within the workplace with an emphasis on basic wound care and manual handling.
