Unit information

This unit introduces you to real world research and career-based experiences to develop and enhance your transferable skills in Environmental Science.
Through seminars and workshops you will learn how environmental science is undertaken by learning from professionals across the disciplines of botany, zoology, ecology, soil science, spatial science and aquatic science.
The unit focuses on important skills for course progression and forms a foundation for your future employability. You will learn about communication, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking.
You will create a portfolio of your key skills, reflect on your ongoing development and keep a record of your self-evaluation over the progression of the course.

Notes
The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.
Enrolment in this unit is mandatory for all students enrolled in their first year of study towards the Bachelor of Environmental Science.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- articulate an understanding of the research process in the multidisciplinary outcomes of Environmental Science;
- demonstrate an ability to communicate science in different modes (oral, online, written), to a variety of professional and public audiences; and
- demonstrate consideration of progression pathways in the Bachelor of Environmental Science.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.

| Oral Presentation - Assurance Task | Yes | 20% | All offerings | Oral presentation at intensive school. Presentation and questions approximately 7 minutes. The oral presentation will be offered face-to-face or online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. To pass this unit, you must achieve a minimum cumulative total of 50% across Oral Presentation - Assurance Task, Progression Conversation - Assurance Task, and Online Participation - Assurance Task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
| Progression Conversation - Assurance Task | Yes | 20% | All offerings | Students need to book a 20 minute conversation with the Unit Coordinator. Students will discuss their choice of specialisation (major) and their cognitive map of how their chosen units fits with their future goals.
