Unit information
Entrepreneurial finance plays a key role in the formation and functioning of entrepreneurial firms. In this unit, you examine how entrepreneurs secure finance in competitive markets and how funding choices influence short- and long-term planning, shaping venture success and failure.
You also explore the resources entrepreneurial firms often lack beyond capital, including financial knowledge and innovations, human capital, reputation, and access to financial, non-financial and technological networks. Using practitioner resources and academic literature, you investigate and analyse how finance and non-financial theories apply to entrepreneurial firms, and you use that evidence to solve typical venture finance problems and make well-reasoned recommendations.
Throughout the unit, you work independently to plan and execute tasks that build your professional capability in entrepreneurial finance.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the motivations and characteristics of entrepreneurial finance and apply this understanding to solving problems faced by entrepreneurial firms;
- use a range of cognitive, communication, and research skills to investigate, analyse, and reflect critically on the applicability of finance and non-financial theories to entrepreneurial firms;
- critically evaluate practitioner resources and academic literature relevant to the field of entrepreneurial finance; and
- work independently to plan and execute tasks to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
