Unit information
The study of English and its use is a central focus in countries such as Australia.
This unit has been designed to explore how the English language is used in personal, community, academic and professional contexts while you gain insights into language use in a multicultural and plurilingual society. It will enhance your ability to adapt to a variety of changing workplace and social contexts.
You will develop knowledge and understanding about language development, a social view of language and varieties of spoken and written English and examine how spoken and written language combine with other ways of making meaning in multimodal texts.
You will apply your understanding of informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment strategies to your own language and literacy skills and needs. You will apply this social view of language when working with a range of texts.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the ways that different contexts of language demand different varieties of language (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 2.1.1);
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how English language works, from the perspective of a social view of language (GTSD 2.1.1); and
- demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of and respect for the use of languages and literacies in a multicultural and plurilingual society (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.4.1, 2.4.1).
