Unit information
To engage with literature is to explore different ways of seeing the world – to appreciate and better understand human ideas, society, history and the future, and so expand your knowledge of the ideas central to human culture as these are expressed through the literary imagination.
In this unit you will study a range of literary texts in English. You will be introduced to works from different historical periods in different genres - short stories, poetry, novels, and plays. You will also explore the key critical concepts in literary studies.
You will explore these works through close reading and critical analysis, focusing on the relationship between form and content, and considering how the different literary techniques available to writers shape the way their texts make meaning.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify genres central to the study of English literature as a foundation for further study;
- demonstrate knowledge of key terms and conventions in English literary studies;
- apply skills in close reading and analysis of literary texts, including an understanding of literary techniques and the language of literary analysis;
- analyse the multiple ways in which texts produce meaning, and the relationship between form and content; and
- integrate reading, writing and research skills in the critical interpretation of literary texts.
