Unit information
Using real-world scenarios and case-based learning, this unit introduces you to pharmacotherapeutics, integrating your pharmacological knowledge with an understanding of disease prevention and management.
Studying this unit, you will explore the foundations of sound clinical decision making, and the ways in which clinical decisions and best practice are informed by evidence-based guidelines.
Focusing on commonly encountered disease states impacting the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and musculoskeletal systems, you will examine the application of guidelines to inform treatment options.
This unit provides you with opportunities to develop future proofed skills that are relevant in a diverse range of pharmacy contexts, including identifying key patient parameters in a case, utilising effective search strategies and identifying and applying evidence to the clinical decision-making process.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- explain mechanisms of action of drugs used in cardiovascular and endocrine disorders, and apply this knowledge to predict their therapeutic and adverse effects;
- explain the pathophysiology of cardiovascular and endocrine disorders and evaluate how this informs pharmacological target identification;
- apply knowledge of drug mechanisms to explain common adverse drug reactions, contraindications, and clinically significant drug interactions relevant to cardiovascular and endocrine pharmacology; and
- synthesise and communicate pharmacological and pathophysiological information to justify rational drug selection for clinical scenarios.

| Assessment 3 - Assurance Task | Yes | 50% | All offerings | Final Examination. There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled. To pass this unit, you must attempt this task and achieve a cumulative mark of at least 50% across all assessments. |
