Unit information
Elder law addresses the legal issues facing older people in contemporary Australia—an issue of growing importance with an ageing population. The unit includes: elder abuse, substitute and supported decision making, mental capacity, accommodation options for older people, age discrimination, Centrelink benefits, grandparents’ rights and the financial implications of choices made by the older person for the entire family.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply legal reasoning to contemporary elder law issues impacting older Australians;
- analyse critically, evaluate and convey information on the legislation governing the legal issues;
- critically evaluate the complexities of the instruments relevant to the needs of the individual older client;
- evaluate the complexities of the instruments relevant to the needs of the individual older client.
