Unit information
In this unit, you will look at the significance and regulation of alcohol and illicit drugs in society, and their problematic association with crime and deviance.
You will be encouraged to take a critical approach to exploring the complex issues surrounding illicit drugs, alcohol, crime and society. You will analyse policy responses including law enforcement, prevention, treatment and harm reduction.
You will explore the regulation of alcohol and illicit drugs, the complex cultures that surround their consumption, and the contentious relationship between alcohol and illicit drug use and crime and deviance.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the significance and regulation of drugs and alcohol in society, both today and in the past;
- examine and explain broader themes and patterns of crime and deviance as revealed through the study of alcohol and illicit drugs;
- historicise contemporary debates about alcohol and illicit drugs, with the ability to communicate this effectively to others; and
- find, evaluate and use evidence effectively, demonstrating and modelling skills applicable in a professional career.
