Unit information
In our modern world, the role of Design and Technology in the Primary Years of education is becoming increasingly important to give students the foundations of critical life-long skills in technological innovation needed by employers and our society.
Studying this unit, you will focus on the place of technology in Primary education, and the subject-specific content and pedagogical content knowledges involved in teaching this aspect of the primary curriculum.
You will explore the role, impact and importance of technology and technological literacy for a sustainable society, and connections between classroom technology learning, working scientifically, science knowledge and understanding, broader STEM approaches and generic capabilities such as critical and creative thinking.
The unit takes a practice-based approach to teaching the processes and skills involved in designing and making technological responses to identified needs or opportunities.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts of technology and technological literacy and their importance for a sustainable society (GTSD 2.1.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of planning, assessment and teaching strategies relevant to technologies, in particular how to develop and document a technological response to an authentic need or opportunity, using a sequential design and production process (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1);
- describe strategies that support students’ well-being and safety working within school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements, within a science and technology context (GTSD 4.4.1, 7.2.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of the links between working technologically, working scientifically, and science knowledge and understanding outcomes together with literacy, numeracy and ICT in primary education, including an understanding of project-based learning and STEM (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.5.1, 2.6.1); and
- describe ways of differentiating science and technology curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners (GTSD 1.5.1).
