Unit information
This unit is designed for students who aspire to work in agricultural extension, consulting or advisory roles.
You will learn how to analyse data and information from various sources, including family farm records and highly aggregated industry and government data, to assess the performance and economic viability of a range of agricultural systems.
You will apply fit-for-purpose decision making tools to build tailored and strategic recommendations for agricultural system managers with the goal of optimising enterprise performance, minimising risk exposure and maintaining or growing economic viability.
Through this process, you will grow to understand how agricultural consultants need to be acutely aware of their clients’ management objectives and context to successfully facilitate positive change or innovation.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically analyse agricultural systems in the context of both ongoing resource availability and economic viability;
- prepare agricultural system analysis outcomes and advice for clients using key performance indicators and economic benchmarks;
- communicate agricultural system analysis outcomes in a professional and ethical manner to clients verbally and via written report; and
- critically assess carbon and biodiversity markets within the context of existing market regulations and a client’s objectives.

To pass this unit, you must achieve a minimum cumulative total of 50% across Mid-Trimester Examination - Assurance Task, and Oral Examination - Assurance Task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
| Oral Examination - Assurance Task | Yes | 30% | All offerings | Prepare and verbally communicate farm system change advice to clients using formal decision-making tools and case study information provided. To pass this unit, you must achieve at least 50% in this task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. The Oral Examination will be offered face-to-face or online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. |
| Tutorial Particpation | Yes | All offerings | The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence. To pass this unit you must attend all tutorials and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
