Unit information
Understanding a wide array of criminological perspectives is important when examining the problems of crime and justice.
This unit explores the emergence and evolution of criminological theory, and the ways in which crime has been and is in contemporary time defined, constructed and regulated. From traditional to emerging perspectives, you will study the practical application of these ideas. Considering theory in practice, you will question how and why crime is understood, policed and punished.
As you critically examine popular conceptions of crime and criminality, you will be learning independent skills in criminology that will contribute to life-long application in a professional career in the field.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a specialised understanding of different theoretical perspectives n criminology;
- independently locate criminology historically and expertly critique and apply key concepts and theoretical perspectives used in the study of crime;
- critically examine popular conceptions of crime and criminality utilising expert knowledge;
- independently apply specialised research methodologies and advanced written analysis to the subject of criminology; and
- model specialised independent skills in criminology that contribute to life-long application in a professional career.
