Unit information
This unit helps prepare you for a future as a professional musician. You will do an in depth study of the creative and technical principles employed in contemporary music recording and production studios.
You will gain an understanding of recording studio technologies including mixers, compressors, equalisers, microphones and monitors using industry-standard digital software tools. You will learn how to record instruments and vocals and gain a practical and conceptual understanding of recording and mixing processes through a variety of applied and analytical exercises.
Sound recording and production techniques of specific artists, audio engineers, and music producers will be critically analysed and deconstructed into their component techniques. You will also progress through a series of critical listening exercises which train and test your ability to interpret sound events including: compression, equalisation, distortion and time-based effects.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- critically listen to and interpret sound events including commonly encountered audio effects such as compression, equalisation, distortion and time-based effects;
- critically analyse the use of music production technologies in sound recordings;
- demonstrate practical skill and technical knowledge of music recording, editing, mixing and processing for creative music making;
- demonstrate practical skill of music recording, editing, mixing and processing for creative music making; and
- demonstrate practical skill and technical proficiency in the use of industry relevant digital audio workstation software.
