Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate the knowledge base underpinning the principles and practices of primary music and dance teaching, including how students learn music and dance in classrooms, how to motivate them for music and dance activities, and understanding the needs of students from diverse cultural backgrounds and different abilities (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.5.1);
2. demonstrate understanding of the curriculum requirements of the NSW Creative Arts K-6 Syllabus, Music and Dance, and the primary music and dance teaching content, which comprise key concepts and structure, designing content using curriculum and assessment, Australian Aboriginal content, and strategies for using ICT (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.3.1, 2.4.1, 2.6.1);
3. demonstrate effective pedagogical approaches for primary music and dance teaching by developing achievable goals, appropriate lesson sequences, and a range of teaching strategies and resources (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1);
4. demonstrate pedagogical skills and knowledge for creating a safe and supportive classroom environment for primary music and dance teaching by incorporating musical activities that all students can do, and providing clear directions for music and dance activities (GTSD 4.1.1, 4.2.1); and
5. demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies for using informal and formal assessments and conducting consistent and comparable judgements of primary students’ music and dance learning (GTSD 5.1.1, 5.3.1).
