Unit information
The literature of a culture reflects the values and beliefs of the people who live within it. Learning from short stories is effective because readers can concentrate on vocabulary, simple language structures and story themes.
This unit aims to introduce you to the study of German short stories. Discussion of the stories will consider such topics as the relationship between the text and the time when it was written, that is, the historical and sociological context in which the stories originated. You will also learn to recognise how the subject matter in stories is presented with regard to literary issues such as style, imagery and symbolism.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced comprehension (German language specialists only) and interpretation of authentic German short stories;
- discuss and critically evaluate cultural and societal differences in German speaking countries as portrayed in the genre of the short story;
- critically discuss literary devices, such as style, symbolism, imagery and narrative perspective at an advanced level; and
- independently and critically analyse and interpret short stories with reference to secondary literature.
