Unit information
Translate theory into real-world practice and hone your skills by completing 250 hours in a supervised community services fieldwork placement.
You will learn through experience as you engage with a range of clients at the level of a beginner community service worker, under supervision in a practice setting. Apply ethical, legal and professional practice standards, as you communicate with and work alongside people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
The precise nature of your role is dependent upon the agency in which you are placed for this unit, and its services and programs. You may be required to travel some distance to undertake your placement.
A full-day mandatory workshop prepares you for the activities and processes you will experience during placement.
Enrolment closes four weeks before trimester commencement.

An accreditation requirement is that there is at least one trimester of study between HLTH201 and HLTH301.
Enrolment closes four weeks before trimester commencement.

It is highly recommended that you follow the Adult Vaccination Schedule as per the NSW Ministry of Health requirements for Category A Health Care Workers. If you undertake a placement in the NSW Health system, you will be required to meet this requirement; this will be confirmed by the Community Services Fieldwork team prior to the placement being arranged.
Advance Standing cannot be given for this unit.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate application of ethical, legal and professional practice standards through performing the role of a community service worker at a beginning level under supervision in a practice setting;
- perform competently to the level required of a beginning level practitioner in selected activities in a practice setting, demonstrating application of relevant theory in practice;
- demonstrate practice skills to work independently and as part of a team in a professional setting;
- appraise their professional practice learning needs in relation to ongoing professional development as a community worker; and
- choose and utilise effective technologies to communicate developing ideas with peers and to produce and present relevant reports on practice based learning.
