Unit information
Community planning is an integral part of an urban and regional planner’s role. This unit gives you the skills and knowledge required to facilitate communities’ ability to plan for and attain their desired future.
You will learn how to form an appreciation of relevant structural and policy issues and to engage with diverse communities in accordance with community protocols to discover how it defines its own aspirations for the future. You will also learn how to identify and deal with data to support planning processes, and to develop plans which facilitate communities’ capacity to meet their own objectives.
Throughout, you will be encouraged to develop your own attributes as a reflective practitioner by focusing on your attitudes and the ways these can shape your practice.
You can also study community planning issues of your own interest, such as the place of advocacy in social planning, and the development of respectful and culturally safe protocols for engagement of cultural groups.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of community planning and participation in both local and international contexts;
- identify and analyse the social, economic and technological forces leading to change in community planning and participation, with the ability to communicate effectively to others;
- critically examine the role of community planning and particpation in shaping locational and service decisions; and
- demonstrate the application of knowledge of community planning and participation principles in the context of planning practice.
