Unit information
Communication is essential to the success of every organisation. This unit will equip you with the theoretical and practical knowledge you need as a professional to effectively manage organisational communication.
Studying this unit, you will examine the emotional, ethical and relational aspects of communication, along with the dynamics of organisational culture.
You will explore a realistic organisational scenario in which communication turns sour and the culture becomes ‘toxic’. Then, drawing on the readings, reflective practice, and your own knowledge and experience, you will identify and address the key leadership issues.
In this way, you will learn how to ensure an organisation is not merely a productive workplace, but a place where people can genuinely flourish.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the key concepts underpinning professional communication, particularly in relation to the role of relational leadership, language, and ethics;
- demonstrate an expert knowledge of the techniques, practices and strategies available to promote positive communication, and/or organisational culture;
- use a range of cognitive, communication and research skills to investigate, analyse, and synthesise critically on relevant communication theories, concepts and strategies to resolve a wide range of complex challenges;
- work independently and/or collaboratively to enhance professional knowledge and skills in the area of professional communication; and
- demonstrate the ability to recognise, reflect on and respond to a range of ethical, cultural or social issues influencing professional communication.

| Examination - Assurance Task | Yes | 50% | All offerings | There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit. To pass this unit, you must achieve at least 50% in this task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
