In an era of rapid change in biomedical science, this unit provides a theoretical understanding of clinical biochemistry principles, equipping you with knowledge and skills highly valued in diverse scientific and clinical contexts.
Focusing on the applications of biochemical tests for diagnosis, this unit combines work integrated learning with online study to understand when, why and how biochemical tests are carried out in clinical settings.
You will learn cutting-edge techniques and data analysis as practiced in a pathology laboratory environment.
Examining the biochemical and cellular basis of inherited and environmental diseases and cancer, you will also critique treatment and prevention strategies, and ethical and social issues.
You will extend your critical thinking and communication skills as you critique literature relevant to current issues in clinical biochemistry.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply highly advanced theoretical knowledge to describe and discuss the application of biochemical tests in human disease;
- apply highly advanced theoretical knowledge to describe and discuss the cell biology of human disease;
- display a highly advanced understanding and appreciation of the ethical and social issues that arise in the context of clinical biochemistry;
- critically analyse and review literature to communicate complex arguments regarding issues in clinical biochemistry and cell biology; and
- exercise critical thinking and judgement, using expert knowledge and skills, in responding to and solving complex problems in relation to clinical biochemistry and cell biology.
