This unit follows on from the first trimester 200-level unit in Chinese, and is designed to complete your basic grounding in Modern Standard Chinese.

Your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese will be further developed, as will your skills and strategies as a language learner.

Attention will be given both to the structures and patterns of the language, as well as to its socio-cultural context and various aspects of Chinese culture, customs and society are introduced through studying spoken and written language texts.

Notes

First language (Chinese) speakers may not enrol in Chinese language units except when required for (school) teaching accreditation in Australian states and territories.

Students may be able to obtain credit for their prior knowledge of the language under the University Admission Credit and Enrolment Guidelines.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

further utilise intermediate structures and functions of the Chinese language in a variety of everyday contexts;
demonstrate further understanding of Chinese language and the use of forms and expressions in colloquial interaction at an intermediate level;
communicate with increasing autonomy in Chinese with some depth on further selected topics of everyday life through the composition of spoken and handwritten text;
apply extended knowledge of Chinese language, culture and society through the analysis and interpretation of language use in social contexts, supported by research where appropriate; and
accurately translate simple texts from Chinese to English, and sentences from English to Chinese.
