Unit information
Australia’s grain crops are vulnerable to threats from a range of pests, weeds and diseases. This unit provides you with an understanding of the major crop protection issues associated with sustainable production of grain crops in Australia, equipping you with the knowledge to solve the complex problems you may encounter in industry.
You will have opportunities to explore challenges relating to cereal, pulse (legumes), cotton and oilseed crops, with topics including weed, disease and pest management, pesticide resistance, chemical application and relevant legislation, grain quality and product integrity.
You will also examine current and emerging biotechnology applications for crop protection, ensuring that you are ready to adapt to innovations in the field and remain at the forefront of modern methods for crop management.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the major pests and diseases of broadacre crops and investigate and critically evaluate current methods of management to reduce their impact;
- independently identify weeds within a specified cropping system and recommend control strategies;
- demonstrate mastery of the issues relating to pesticide resistance, and use this knowledge to independently plan potential strategies to avoid or overcome a problem in a specific situation;
- present a coherent and sustained discussion of the principles of, and practical isues involved with, chemical application including an outline of the legislative responsibilities of all participants in the industry; and
- critically evaluate a specific broadacre crop storage facility or environment and, if appropriate, recommend improved approaches or practices.

There is a supervised exam during the exam period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit. |
