Unit information
Screen production in Australia today encompasses multiple platforms, reflecting a shift away from ‘the national’ towards screen products that cater to niche audiences and reflect the diversity of Australia.
In this unit you will study the contemporary Australian screen industry and how it has been informed by the history of Australian film and television.
You will explore issues of representation (gender, race, class, disability) and the role of industry policy in shaping what we see on our screens.
With a curriculum that is both historically informed and industrially aware, this unit will help you acquire knowledge and skills applicable to a range of media industries and screen production contexts.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate advanced and in-depth knowledge of a range of significant works and developments in the Australian screen industry;
- interpret, apply and evaluate key methods of screen media analysis and of national, international and transnational media study, to investigate Australian screen texts in their cultural, industrial and policy contexts;
- apply advanced skills of analysis and research to investigate questions of screen media representation, production and reception;
- apply advanced writing skills to develop and present coherent arguments and critical analyses of Australian screen texts in their media and cultural contexts; and
- demonstrate an understanding of screen and media culture in Australia that equips them to apply skills and disciplinary knowledge in further learning or professional practice, and to present ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
