Unit information
In a school context, psychologists are often the first entry point for children and young people seeking support, and can play a role as key facilitator between student, parent/carer, school personnel and external stakeholders.
Young people seek help for a multitude of presenting difficulties that vary in complexity and severity. In this unit, you will explore the assessment and treatment of common presenting problems within a school context. You will also learn about support services that are available in educational settings, and the ways in which psychologists can provide support for students with additional needs.
Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary professionals within and outside of the school setting is vital. This unit is designed to hone your skills in interprofessional working which enable you to provide effective feedback and recommendations to support young people to work towards their personal and academic potential.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply systemic and developmental frameworks to the planning and conduct of student assessments within the school context, using a culturally responsive approach;
- synthesise data from multiple sources in order to interpret assessment findings and develop a case formulation to inform intervention for students with additional support needs;
- develop recommendations for intervention for students with additional needs based on case formulation, and engage all relevant stakeholders to support implementation of recommendations; and
- demonstrate an understanding of evidence-based approaches to treatment of presenting issues which are specific to the school context.
