Unit information
In this unit, you will learn how to describe and analyse a range of artefacts and other materials commonly found during archaeological research: metal, pottery, stone artefacts, glass, faunal remains, archaeobotanical remains and more. Through a combination of practical exercises, demonstrations, lectures and discussions, you will learn about the unique qualities of these different materials and the ways they can be used to interpret human behaviour.
During your intensive school in the Archaeology Laboratory at UNE, you’ll get hands-on experience and discuss associated methodological protocols and issues with your lecturer and peers.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the diverse sources of evidence used by archaeologists (including excavated, representational, observational, artefactual, environmental and other scientific evidence);
- describe and apply analysis techniques including recording, measurement, analysis and interpretation of archaeological material;
- exhibit an understanding of how archaeological materials are interpreted in changing theoretical, methodological, ethical and social contexts; and
- select and apply appropriate statistical and numerical techniques to processing of archaeological data, recognising the potential and limitations of such techniques.
