Unit information
This unit is designed to open your eyes to the worlds of architecture and urban design, and to enhance your enjoyment and understanding of your surroundings.
It provides an introduction to key ideas, theories and methods that are used to read and interpret built-form. With respect to the architecture, the unit considers architectural history, different architectural styles, architectural aesthetics and appraisal, along with contemporary debates in architecture and the work of prominent international architects.
With respect to urban design, the unit examines how places are physically or formally structured, the importance of the public realm, perceptions of place, uses of space in everyday life, and ways in which power, conflict and difference play out through built-form.
No previous knowledge of architecture or urban design is assumed.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the common architectural styles;
- identify and examine the name and the work of a number of well known architects, with the ability to transmit this knowledge to others;
- critically evaluate town centre streets and public places with a heightened awareness of related design issues; and
- use autonomy and judgement in the discussion of architectural issues, with a demonstrated understanding of the professional world in which architects operate.
