Unit information
The future success of Australia’s cotton industry relies on skilled professionals who can integrate the management of natural, human and economic resources to produce sustainable cotton crops.
This unit provides you with a solid foundation in environmentally and economically sustainable, efficient cotton production.
You will examine aspects of breeding, cotton growth and development, nutrition and soil management, irrigation, farm design and cotton quality, building your understanding of the theoretical framework and principles of the cotton production system.

The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- utilise principles of cotton plant physiology, integrated pest, disease, and weed management to design evidence-based strategies that ensure crop resilience and yield potential;
- evaluate the efficiency of production inputs, including soil fertility, crop nutrition and irrigation management, to provide recommendations that enhance the economic and environmental sustainability of Australian cotton systems;
- analyse data from precision agriculture technologies to assess field variability, and evaluate the validity of emerging technologies in Australian cotton systems; and
- evaluate how field management decisions impact final fibre quality, base grade requirements, and economic returns for the grower.

| Oral Examination and Presentation - Assurance Task | Yes | 30% | All offerings | Grower Consultation Oral examination and presentation of pre-prepared management plan and defence of decisions made. Duration approximately 20 minutes. The oral examination will be offered face-to-face or online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. To pass this unit, you must achieve a minimum cumulative total of 50% across the Oral Examination and Presentation – Assurance Task and the Final Examination - Assurance Task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
