Unit information
This unit is focused on the practical application of key nutrition issues affecting ruminant, monogastric, equine and companion animals.
Studying this unit, you will use cutting-edge research and knowledge to develop a decision-making framework for nutritional interventions in a range of scenarios.
You will have opportunities to extend your understanding of the social and environmental issues that are relevant to production animals, equipping you for sustainable nutritional management in an era of increasing resource instability.
Topics covered include feed formulation, supplementary feeding and an in-depth overview of applied animal nutrition relevant to production and companion animals.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- analyse the role and function of the key segments of the digestive tract, and how they relate to feeding behaviours of key animal groupings, and link this to best-practice feeding recommendations;
- assess the roles of key dietary nutrients, their availability in different feed sources, and their requirements for animal groups with differing digestive physiologies in different physiological states;
- formulate and justify practical, evidence-based diets and feeding recommendations for animal groups with differing digestive physiologies in different physiological states;
- describe and communicate nutritional and management strategies relevant to animal production, health and sustainability; and
- evaluate the environmental sustainability and welfare implications of nutritional management strategies for production, working and companion animals.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.
