Unit information
Analytical chemistry offers us a window into the world of matter. It has broad practical applications for environmental, forensic and pharmaceutical analysis, particularly in relation to drug activity and reactions, and the chemical reactions occurring in the Earth’s atmosphere.
You will delve into the fundamental principles of analytical chemistry, with a tailored focus on the application of different techniques to environmental, forensic or pharmaceutical science as relevant to your study needs.
You will explore a range of analytical techniques, including molecular and atomic spectroscopies, gas and liquid chromatography and conductometric methods.
A large proportion of chemistry graduates who use their degree for their work perform some analytical chemistry – this unit will allow you to hone your knowledge and technical skills to stand out in your career.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand fundamental physical and chemical concepts which underpins the activity and reactions of drug molecules or the chemical reactions within the troposphere, stratosphere and natural waters using a broad theoretical knowledge of chemistry;
- utilise a broad range of cognitive, technical and communication skills related to environmental or pharmaceutical science;
- use these techniques to interpret and analyse data from pharmaceutical or environmental monitoring and sampling; and
- select the most appropriate methods and technology in solving environmental chemical problems or for pharmaceutical analysis.

Of the submitted reports, one (1) is completed as a poster and one (1) other as a short report. Students will be assessed on their laboratory skills and their demonstrated ability to connect theoretical concepts with laboratory practice. Students will need to demonstrate professional conduct in the laboratory, including the the ability to work safely, collegially, and productively in a shared setting. |
