Unit information
Understanding educational psychology will position you as a teacher with advanced skills in effective classroom teaching.
In this unit you will learn about how learning and personal development (e.g. cognition) are intertwined. You will critically analyse educational psychology theories of personal development from historical and contemporary perspectives.
You will learn and appreciate recent research development in educational psychology (e.g. the study of mindfulness), situated within both academic and non-academic contexts. At the same time, you will also be introduced to the importance of methodological designs and scientific and non-scientific validation of research inquiries in educational psychology.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- analyse how key concepts of educational psychology theories, including cognitive development, relate to positive educational outcomes;
- integrate educational psychology theories into their personal philosophy of education and use judgement to apply it in diverse situations;
- apply theories of individual differences, such as theories of intelligence and 'learning styles' to different educational contexts; and
- critically analyse relevant theories in the light of the historical and cultural context in which they were developed.
